E – Educate Yourself:

This is not an option; I addressed this extensively in Chapter 2 of my book What’s Next? Career Advancement Strategies for Young Professionals. You must take personal development seriously

There are key skills required for career take-off and advancement like decision-making, problem-solving, creative thinking, empathy, integrity, negotiation skills, that no one thought you in the university, the onus is on you to self-train.

I have seen and encountered career professionals that completely outsourced their career development to their line manager or HR, forgetting that these people are also employees chasing after their own careers.

In order to take charge of your personal development, you must do the following:

– Draw up your career plan: you can’t move forward without understanding your direction

– Identify the gaps that you need to address: from your career plan, identify where you are currently and what is required to move forward, these are gaps that must be addressed by you.

– Map out plan/strategy to address these gaps: depending on where you are on your career journey, pace yourself in terms of learning.
